Happy 4th of July from DeCamillis & Mattingly!

Please Use Fireworks Safely to Avoid Injuries and Have a Great Holiday!

Celebrating our independence with cookouts, picnics, and … Fireworks!

4th of July is tremendously fun, and at DeCamillis & Mattingly, PLLC, we hope you enjoy your holiday as much as we will, with friends and family. Of course, enjoyment means avoiding injuries! (We can’t blog without an injury-prevention message, can we?)

Here are our Top 5 Tips for avoiding 4th of July injuries:

  1. Light only one firework at a time and from a safe distance.
  2. Never throw or point fireworks at other people.
  3. Never give fireworks to small children.
  4. Always have a bucket of water handy to extinguish any accidental fires.
  5. Dispose of fireworks by soaking them in water before throwing them away.

With any firecrackers you purchase, always carefully follow the instructions on the box; read all safety warnings, and take all suggested safety precautions. Fireworks are not toys, so adults should always handle them. This includes (buzz-kill alert) SPARKLERS! Even though the labels might indicate they are safe for children, they are NOT SAFE FOR CHILDREN! Did you know sparklers can burn at temperatures of up to 1,800 degrees? They can start fires, and they can burn skin and eyes – a very frequent cause of pediatric emergencies during 4th of July celebrations.

Finally, don’t forget your furry friends.  Fireworks frighten a lot of dogs, and they will run!  Make sure your dogs are in a safe place before the explosions begin!

With that, we leave you to hopefully practice safety around fireworks and with a couple of additional links for more 4th of July safety. Have fun!
